The start of 2020 saw the commencement of construction for the QUT International College Refurbishment at Kelvin Grove. The multimillion-dollar project has been in the design phase since January 2019, so there is much excitement amongst the entire project team as we enter into construction and begin to see our designs realised in the built form.
With the appointment of Buildcorp as head Contractor, the construction programme was finalised and separated into three key phases to ensure the strict ongoing academic and operational requirements of the College are not compromised by the refurbishment works.
Stage 1 includes the construction of all Student and Teaching zones. Connected by a Man and Materials Hoist, the spaces comprise of six collaborative classrooms, informal student breakout spaces and public amenities spread across three levels of the building due for handover this April. These works are closely followed by the commencement of Stage 2 – Staff Office spaces to accommodate admin, teaching and directorate staff of the college. The final stage 3 is set to take place in June and will incorporate the transient zones that connect the teaching and student spaces completed in stages 1 and 2. This includes the main building entry foyer that houses a double-height sculptural metal tree and custom-designed concierge facilities for the students.
Stay tuned for more updates on what will be a very exciting construction to come!
