About the Project

The Sunnybank Private Hospital underwent a major redevelopment including a new 3 storey strata titled Specialist Consultant Suite block on the McCullough Street frontage with 2 new floors of medical suites and one level of carparking. 

The existing hospital clinical facilities were also expanded and includes 2 additional Operating Theatres, a Cardiac Catheter Laboratory and associated staff areas. Due to the additional Operating Theatres capacity, the existing Theatre Recovery and Day Surgery Units were expanded. Extensive alterations to the site access and significant additional car park areas were also part of the redevelopment as well as other minor alterations to the existing support facilities.

The project presented numerous challenges including building within an operational hospital environment. One of the critical challenges involved the staging of the Day Surgery Unit expansion that involves some 7 stages to enable the current level of services to be maintained whilst construction continued. The staging was successfully developed through a close consultation process with the Client and Project Manager in detailed workshops. Another key challenge was that the design had to maintain vehicle and pedestrian access not only to the Sunnybank Private Hospital but also the adjacent McCullough Centre which has access rights through the site. Site services had to be relocated and staging considered to suit the functional requirements of the hospital and to maintain services at all times
