Winner 2013 Master Builders Award for Health & Education facilities up to $5 Million, Toowoomba Grammar School Boarding House

About the Project

In line with the schools vision, historic Toowoomba Grammar School has recently expanded facilities to include Mackintosh House.

PDT Architects worked closely with the school to establish Mackintosh House as a “home away from home” for students that is in keeping with its surrounds and the schools existing master plan. A holistic approach to design has ensured that the boarding house addresses accommodation requirements as well as recognising the importance of the social and entertainment needs of boarders.

PDT has worked with Toowoomba Grammar school over a period of 20 years. In this time we have designed the cricket pavilion, library, junior school, teacher’s administration building, boarding house and the aquatic centre. We work collaboratively with the school during the course of each project to ensure that every building reflects the School’s long history and traditions and is sympathetic to the heritage surrounds of the Toowoomba region

The new building takes advantage of site contours creating the effect of the boarding house being nestled into the site. The building incorporates themes from existing facilities, creating a visual unity between the new and old. The boarding house design incorporates a series of practical sustainable features which help to reduce its environmental footprint and reduce lifecycle maintenance costs. The new building has raised the bar for boarding facilities at the school and has been widely embraced by the school community.
