About the Project

In September 2017 the Queensland Department of Education engaged PDT Architects as the Principal Consultant on Stage 3 of Mackay Northern Beaches State High School.

The brief was to enhance the school’s master plan through the design and document of a new performing arts centre, outdoor sports courts, outdoor plaza spaces, walkway links and minor refurbishments of existing buildings for GLA conversions.

PDT worked closely with the Department of Education, school stakeholders and Ridgemill Project Management to design and deliver the $12million dollar project under a traditional contract with the FKG Group.

The concepts of rhythm and movement were conveyed through the form and materiality of the new Performing Arts Centre which houses specialist dance studios, drama classrooms, a music GLA and ensemble rehearsal room, dressing rooms, costume and props storage and a box office kiosk.  A mezzanine level provides space for AV and lighting equipment, staff workroom and kitchenette.
